When billionaire oil heiress Ivy Getty sealed her marriage to Tobias Engel with a kiss at City Hall in San Francisco, the bridal crown she was wearing fell off her head.

It was a moment guests quickly forgot as they were immediately serenaded with Myra's Miracles Happen, from the hit film Princess Diaries, but as Ivy files for divorce after just a few years of marriage, they may reflect it was a moment of foreboding.

Tying the knot in November 2021 (after a private ceremony 11 months earlier), when the Covid pandemic was still ripping through communities, meant that large gatherings were a risky business. Nonetheless, Ivy, great-granddaughter of oil tycoon J. Paul Getty, managed to make her miracle happen as she wore a John Galliano mirrored bridal gown to walk down the aisle in a ceremony officiated by Nancy Pelosi.

Ivy, who is also a model, was accompanied by bridesmaids including actress Anya Taylor-Joy and also some cousins, with every detail of the fantasy union documented in the pages of Vogue.

But for Tobias and Ivy, who had met a few years earlier through mutual friends at Paris Fashion Week, the fairytale romance is over, as Page Six reports the 29-year-old heiress filed for divorce in January.

Ivy previously told Vogue she and Tobias, known to friends and family as 'Toby', got engaged on one of the many trips the couple had taken abroad, in Capri.

She revealed they had attended a Unicef ball a few days earlier, before deciding to spend some time in Italy, and went out for dinner one night but, in a break from the couple's usual routine, Toby picked the restaurant for dinner.

Although Ivy said she was always the one who chose the couple's dinner plans, she was happy to go along with her partner's choice - and when they arrived at the restaurant, all became clear.

The first night of the three-day celebration was a mod themed party at the Palace of Fine Arts in San Francisco

'As the sun was getting ready to set, we went outside to take photos of it. Toby set his iPhone timer and got down on one knee. The timer went off at the perfect moment as we have the most incredible photo,' she said.

The ring was a large stone surrounded by diamonds which had been sourced from a necklace Ivy had been gifted by her grandmother as a teenager - which the heiress said gave it enormous sentimental value to her and always brought a 'smile' to her face.

However, the couple couldn't throw themselves into wedding planning quite yet, as the world was still in the throes of the pandemic which threw everything into uncertainty. So, like the rest of the world, they sat tight.

Sadly, 2020 saw Ivy lose two relatives; her grandmother Ann, an interior designer, and her father John Gilbert Getty. A postmortem later concluded John had died from a fentanyl overdose coupled with a heart condition.

Ivy explained the loss of two close relatives made her realise the importance of waiting until the pandemic had settled to get married, so she could be surrounded by loved ones. It also made her sure she wanted the entire wedding to be an homage to her grandmother - meaning part of the three-day extragavanza was to be held in her home (the interiors of which had been designed by Ann).

Fast-forward to November 2021 and guests arrived in San Francisco for the lavish nuptials, which included a mod party on night one in which guests including bridesmaid Anya Taylor-Joy and Princess Olympia of Greece were dolled up in swinging sixties gear.

Other guests included designer Wes Gordon, designer Mimi Wade, influencer Marta Mae, musician Petite Meller, fashion editor Hamish Bowles, activist Marsha Molinari, model Laura Hanson Sims, British TV host Fletcher Cowan, and filmmaker (and Kiernan Shipka's boyfriend) Christian Coppola.

In a post on Instagram, Ivy shared photos of herself and revellers at the party, where Mark Ronson was on the DJ decks and Earth Wind and Fire performed, and thanked her stylists, photographers and acts saying the wedding celebrations were the 'best week of my life'.

To host the British Invasion Mod Party at the Palace of Fine Arts in San Francisco, a team of event organisers led by the bride's close friend Stanlee Gatti spent a week transforming the venue into the perfect 60s party space. Over the course of the night, Ivy appeared in three vintage outfits.

On the second day of festivities, guests were invited to attend a picnic party at a the Log Cabin in Presidio, a venue which overlooks the city.

To attend the picnic, the bride wore a black lace gown from Alexander McQueen's 2016 collection, while any guests who might have been suffering from sore heads after the mod party were treated to IV drips to help them replenish their stocks.

That evening, the bridal party attended a rehearsal ceremony at City Hall before an 'intimate' dinner as they got ready for the big ceremony the following day.

As the bride and her 14 bridesmaids got ready for the big day in City Hall, they had a 'pyjama party' to celebrate the upcoming nuptials.

The late John Galliano, who designed Ivy's mirrored bridal gown, revealed he also designed all 14 bridesmaid dresses - something he wouldn't normally do because the wedding dress itself takes up so much time.

However, he said he had been 'bewitched' by Ivy and her tales of the women who were accompanying her down the aisle, so he decided to make and exception.

As the ceremony took place, with Nancy Pelosi standing before the couple, guests were enamoured by Toby's vows in which he said Ivy had been the 'biggest gift' of his life.

Following the ceremony, guests moved to Getty Mansion for the wedding reception - at which point Ivy changed into her second wedding gown, a lace couture dress by Maison Margiela.

After an evening of partying, the San Francisco elite called it a night at around 1am.

Reflecting on the three-day extravaganza, Ivy said: 'It's just like everything I could have dreamed of and more.'

However, two-and-a-half years on, the couple's fairytale has come to an end as Ivy has filed for divorce, according to Page Six. The couple have a prenup in place to protect her billionaire family's assets.

According to the court documents, it is a 'contested' divorce.

That means the former pair did not settle with a mediator before Getty filed the paperwork.

Ivy has since deleted a number of pictures featuring Engel from her Instagram, though he still remains in some carousel posts from their wedding.
